Miniature Schnauzer and Shih Tzu
Miniature Schnauzer
Of German origin, the Miniature Schnauzer comes from the same root as the Schnauzer but it is believed that Affenpinscher blood was also included to bring down size, while retaining Terrier characteristics. The Miniature Schnauzer first appeared in the show ring in 1899. A sturdily built, robust breed, nearly square in outline, the Miniature Schnauzer has a keen expression and alert attitude. With medium-sized dark oval eyes and arched bushy eyebrows, this is a stylish and adaptable breed kept primarily as a companion dog. The Miniature Schnauzer has a harsh wiry coat with a dense undercoat. Colours: Pepper and Salt, Black, Black and Silver and White Build: Ideal height for dogs is 35.6 cm (14 inches) and for the bitches 33 cm (13 inches). Weight is generally 6-8 kg (13-17 lbs).
Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu originates from China and they have appeared in paintings and documents from the 16th century. They are believed to be ascended from crossing the Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese. The dogs were popular with Chinese Royals who refused to trade, sell or give them away. They were first imported into England in the 1930's.
Temperament: This is a particularly alert and lively small dog. Packed with character, the gentle and loyal Shih Tzu makes friends very easily. Courageous and clever, this breed enjoys the company of humans and other animals. Every human in the household needs to make house rules consistently clear to the Shih Tzu. Owners who allow the dog to take over may find them difficult to control and they can even develop behavioural difficulties such as growling and even biting. Be firm, stable and consistent and your dog will not develop these uncharacteristic traits; instead, they will be sweet, playful and affectionate.
Colours: Gold, Dark/Light Brown, White, Black, Black/White, Brindle Red.
Build: The Shih Tzu has a soft and long double coat; it stands no more than 26.7 cm (101⁄2 in.) at the withers and with an ideal weight of 4.5 to 7.3 kg (10 to 16 lbs.).
